open eir commences Vectoring roll out, boosts fibre broadband speeds to 100Mbps
open eir has become one of the first telecommunications companies in the world to deploy VDSL2 Vectoring technology in its Next Generation Fibre Access network, boosting broadband speeds up to 100 Mbps for more than 700,000 homes and businesses across Ireland.
Vectoring on VDSL2 technology is a cutting edge development that uses noise cancelling technology to boost broadband speeds to homes and businesses. This process strengthens the broadband signal and gives home and business broadband customers faster speeds.
open eir has already deployed vectoring technology to 150 of its fibre broadband cabinets. By the end of this month, vectoring will have been deployed to the vast majority of open eir’s 3,000 fibre broadband cabinets.
Upon completion, open eir estimates that at least 70% of the approximately 700,000 homes and businesses currently passed by its fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) network will be able to achieve speeds of between 70Mbps and 100Mbps.

Commenting on the development Carolan Lennon, Managing Director open eir, said “Leading telecoms analysts such as Analysys Mason estimate that by 2020 European homes and small businesses will need download speeds of 100Mbps. With the deployment of vectoring we’re making those speeds available to homes and businesses within our existing national fibre footprint now, and the 1.4 million homes and businesses we intend to reach by 2016. Once completed, the broadband speeds available over our National Next Generation Fibre Access Network are now faster than most Fixed Line Operators across Europe.

- open eir’s Next Generation Fibre Access Network (NGA) is currently available to more than 700,000 homes and businesses in 26 counties, listed below.
- When complete approximately 1.4 million homes and businesses, or 70% of Irish premises, will be able to access high-speed fibre broadband over the open eir network from a range of service providers.
- Vectoring has been deployed to the Wholesale network. Retail Operators may be required to upgrade their customers’ speed profiles for the full benefit to be experienced.
- Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) is the most prevalent Next Generation Access technology being deployed in Europe, with over 56 million homes now passed by FTTC networks.
- open eir’s (NGA)network is available to all Operators on an open access basis, with 15 operators having now connected customers to the network.
